TVIG Begins BOP construction for the Laurel Mountain Wind Farm

July 2010 - TVIG began BOP construction for the Laurel Mountain wind farm project, located in Elkins, West Virginia in June 2010. The 91.5 MW project is comprised of 61 (GE 1.5 xle) turbines along an 11-mile stretch of mountain ridgeline. As the BOP General Contractor, TVIG is responsible for the entire design/build of the project including, civil and electrical design, roads, foundations, substation, electrical collection system, and turbine erection. AES is the developer and owner of the project.

TVIG’s proven mountain wind project construction experience uniquely enables it to provide value-added design and construction solutions to address the additional challenges of building a wind farm on forested, rocky and steep terrain. Some of the challenges on Laurel Mountain include extensive clearing, major civil/earthwork cut and fills to minimize steep grades, drilling and blasting rock, precision traffic management related to the single point of entry and exit, and narrow track crane movements. The Project was built thru some extremely difficult weather conditions in an impossible mountainous region of the country.
