TVIG Begins BOP construction for the Steel Winds II Wind Farm
June 2011 - TVIG began BOP construction for the Steel Winds II wind farm project, located along the shores of Lake Erie in Hamburg and Lackawanna, NY. The 15 MW project is comprised of 6 Clipper Liberty 2.5 MW turbines on the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Lackawanna Works site. As the BOP Contractor, TVIG is responsible for all design/build aspects of the project including, civil, structural and electrical design, site grading and roads, WTG foundations, substation modernization, underground and overhead electrical collection system, close-circuit television system, and WTG transportation and erection. First Wind is the developer and owner of the project.
TVIG's proven experience with unique and demanding wind project site conditions, along with it's experience constructing Steel Winds I for First Wind, positioned it to provide the most cost-effective solutions to the myriad of challenges posed by this brownfield site. Some of the unique challenges of Steel Winds II include non-native (steel slag) soil conditions, RCRA environmental compliance, and modernizing a 1960's era substation with 21st century protection and control technology.
